The finish is only as good as what’s under it

Kirajade is run by Kira and Joshua. Between us we’ve put twenty-five years into the construction industry, and we’ve been car people for longer than that. Both have a way of teaching the same lesson: the finish is only ever as good as the surface under it.

Why we started this

In construction the surface is the part nobody sees, so it’s the part that gets squeezed when the program is tight. The coating goes on over rust that wasn’t fully removed, or over a slab that was never properly opened up, and it holds for a year or two. Then it lets go, and by then it’s somebody else’s problem. We’ve both watched that happen more times than we’d like.

Cars taught us the same lesson earlier and more personally. A respray over metal that wasn’t taken back properly doesn’t last, and you can’t hide it. You learn to look at what’s underneath before you trust the finish.

When laser cleaning became something two people could own and run properly, it gave us a way to do the one part of the job we’d always cared about most, and to do it without the compromises blasting forces on you. So that’s what Kirajade is: surface preparation, done by people who have seen what happens when it isn’t done.

Why cars are still part of it

We’re car people. Some of ours are old and some aren’t, and what they have in common is that somebody cared about them. That’s where both of us learned not to trust a finish until we’d seen the metal, because on a car bad prep comes back through the paint within a season. Buildings take longer to tell you, but they tell you.

That habit is what we bring to a balustrade or a factory floor. The laser suits it: it takes the surface back to what it was without adding anything, and you can stand there and watch it happen. If you’re a restorer or a panel shop, that’s probably the part you’ll care about most, and we’re happy to show you on your own part.

What we won’t tell you

That the laser does everything. It doesn’t, and we have the blasting gear to prove it. That we can quote a job we haven’t seen a photo of. That we’re “eco-friendly” or “state of the art”. Everybody says it and it has stopped meaning anything.

What we will tell you is what we’d do, what it will cost, and what it will look like when we’re finished. Then we do that.

Safety

Everything we do carries a real risk. A Class 4 laser. Grinding concrete and masonry that release silica. High-pressure water. Blast media moving at speed. We came out of construction, where safety is part of how you work rather than a form you sign, and Kirajade runs the same way.

Every job gets a controlled work area set up for the method: laser-rated screens and eyewear, dust extraction and respiratory protection, exclusion zones for water and media. Every job comes with a written safe-work method statement you can keep on file. The standard is the same in your building or in our workshop, and it covers the people around us as well as us.

Insurance certificates and training records are available on request. We’d rather show you the paperwork than make claims about it.

Based on Brisbane’s north side. We work at our workshop and on site across South East Queensland, and we can organise transport to and from the workshop around Brisbane and metropolitan SEQ. If your job is further out, ask. We’ll travel when it makes sense for both of us.
